As a perfect antidote to the standard faire of pantomime that appears to be only thing available at this time of year, Theatre 64's next production will be the greek tragedy 'Antigone'. This play is based on the classical play written by Sophocles.

Antigone is the daughter of the late King, and niece of the current King Creon. There has been a bloody civil war between her two brothers after the death of their father, in which both brothers die in battle. King Creon decrees that the remains of the traiter brother must remain unburied. Although fond of his niece, the dictator Creon cannot for political reasons have her defy him and tells her in no uncertain terms that she must obey him. Antigone must decide whether to accept Creons orders or to defy him and risk the possibility of death.

This version of the play, was written by Jean Anouilh and first performed in France in 1944 during the German occupation. With its theme of resistance to oppression, it was a thinly disguised attack on the Nazis and the Vichy government of France. This translation by Lewis Galantiere, and the modern staging by Theatre 64, makes this classic highly accessible to modern audiences and should make for an enjoyable night's theatre.

Performances are at the Main Hall, Yateley Centre, Yateley, at 8.00pm, Friday 17th, Saturday 18th, Friday 24th and Saturday 25th January 2003 with an additional matinee performance at 3.00pm on Saturday 25th January (however because of the theme the play is not probably suitable for small children).

Tickets are £6.50 for adults, £4.50 for concessions. There is a further discount of 10% for pre-booking. For the Saturday matinee performance only, there is a special pre-booked price of only £2 for English language and drama students.

Tickets are available from the group's box office on (01344) 774266 or in person from Travallen Travel, Reading Road, Yateley.
