Written as a satire on the perils of Stalinism, George Orwell's novel has withstood the test of time and still serves as a parable about the pitfalls of totalitarianism.
Adapted by Ian Wooldridge, this production portrays the overthrow of their human master by the farm animals and their hopes for a bright new future. Leadership is taken over by the pigs, which are cleverer than the other animals, but the desire to rule and make everyone conform to their hardworking ideals soon corrupt the original dream of being free.
Directed by Claire Barber, the cast have chosen not to portray the characters merely as animals but to concentrate on their roles as workers subject to exploitation. In changing the ruling regime their lot is not necessarily improved. "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others".
