Yateley based amateur drama group, Theatre 64, offers local audiences the chance to see something a little different this summer - a showcase of three new plays, all by local writers. The plays all offer very different styles, so audiences can expect comedy and tragedy, drama and farce.

'Definitely No Pineapples' by Phillip Gething will open the evening, and is based on a true incident involving the young Mae West. Phillip lives in Fleet and belongs to the Farnborough, Fleet and District Writers' Circle. In the past, he has seen some of his short stories published, as well as winning prizes in a number of literary competitions. However, he describes the public performance of one of his plays as "a new and exciting experience".

The second new play to be presented will be 'Between Stars' by Matthew Wilkie, of Ash. Matthew is the current Artistic Director of T64 and has already written and directed a number of plays for the group in the past. "It can be so difficult for writers to get exposure", he says, "so the Showcase is a great opportunity to present new work, as well as giving local audiences a evening of exciting and varied theatre".

The final play of the evening is 'Not The Butler' by Peter Rolls, a retired Head of Printing and Photography, who lives in Camberley. Peter took up writing with adult education classes, with recent playwriting successes including a prize at last year's Nottingham Play Festival and a 'highly commended' in a recent 'new play' competition. 'Not The Butler' provides the Showcase with a fitting end to the evening, as it follows the trials and tribulations of an amateur playwright in a small village - however, in this play there are a few unexpected surprises ...

You can see 'A Showcase of New Local Plays' at the Main Hall, Yateley Centre, School Lane, Yateley from Wednesday 1st to Saturday 4th August 2001 at 8.00pm.
