The Importance of Being Earnest
by Oscar Wilde
A magnificent send-up of elite Victorian society focussing on their ideals of marriage and morality. The play is full of Wildean wit, and contains some of his most famous lines. It pokes fun at the aristocracy, the literary world, English manners and customs, marriage, women, men, love, religion... the list is endless. When it was first performed in 1895 it was received with hilarity by the very people that is was satirising. Its popularity has not waned and it remains one of the most well-loved comedies of manners.
